We have been tracking the rise and rise of msn emoticon or smiley statistics for some time and the figures are remarkable. Who would have thought that a little yellow faced icon would create such worldwide popularity. The phenomenon just keeps breaking records whenever we investigate the numbers. The statistics really are astounding.

We have recently compiled some msn emoticon statistics for the past twelve month period and the results are amazing. If we look at the number of daily searches made for the major smiley and msn emoticon keywords, the figures are as follows:

The current total daily searches for these four major keywords are 950,232. That’s nearly one million searches every single day! WOW! Over a whole year this represents 346,834,680 or almost 350 million searches. What are you all doing with them?
They originally started life as additions to emails in order to express emotions, which were sometimes difficult to do in words. With the advent of mobile communications using phones, iphones, smartphones and other devices, the places that you can now utilise emoticons or smileys has escalated dramtically. This in turn has fuelled the search for that special msn emoticon or smiley which just fits the situation at hand.
Where there is a demand there is always a supply. To service this increasing demand the number of web pages which answer the call when a smileys or msn emoticons search is made has also risen dramatically to record levels.
The number of web pages that Google has found to satisfy the smileys and msn emoticons search keywords are as follows:

In total for these four search keywords, there are potentially 572.3 million web pages satisfying the search. Because a lot of the pages in each search will be the same, the true number will be less than that. But if you then take into account the other search terms or keywords that people use to find msn emoticons and smileys, then the total number could be back up towards 500 million. These are estimates on my part. To find the true figure would be a mammoth exercise to collate all the numbers for all the possible combinations of msn emoticon and smiley keywords and then go through every single identified web page and discount the duplicates. This is something that Google could do (maybe it does this already!) and the results would be very interesting.
What is amazing is the increase in the number of web pages satisfying these searches over the last year. The average increase for all these is a staggering 475.8%. There can be fewer products with such an annual increase anywhere. The msn emoticon or smiley clearly goes form strength to strength and shows little sign of slowing down. With animated and 3D emoticons and smileys they will continue to have an exciting and expanding future.
